Who’s afraid of…heights?

If you live in Liangshan County, Sichuan province, in southwest China, then whether you have a fear of heights is irrelevant.

If you wanted to cross the Jinsha River, then you had to use the Yinggeliu open-air gondola. The gondola is similar in design to the structure used in shark-cage diving, and moves along a pair of steel wires about 400m above the Jinsha River.

For those with an aversion to heights however, there is some good news. One of China’s most harrowing forms of transport is about to be retired, and replaced with a bridge.

May 2013 saw the launch of the “slip rope to bridge” project, which is set to be completed in the near future.
