Zidane: Being on top means nothing

Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has played down their five point lead at the summit of the Spanish Primera Division, claiming it means nothing.

Following the hard-fought 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames Stadium on Saturday, Los Blancos pulled five points ahead of second-placed Barcelona.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring for the visitors before Aritz Aduriz equalised for Ernesto Valverde’s side just after the hour mark.

Nonetheless, the most unlikely of scorers popped up, with defensive midfielder Casemiro finding a winner only two minutes later.

“We won on a difficult pitch,” he said after the game. “We suffered a huge amount but we played with personality at the same time.

“We know Athletic will not give up until the end and they cause us some problems. They got a goal in the second half when they were playing well.

“It was important to win – we’re still on a good run. There are 11 games left, we’re top, but that means nothing. We know there are still difficult games left.”
