Wolf: Stuttgart lucky to get past Cottbus

VfB Stuttgart manager Hannes Wolf admits his side were fortunate to get past Energie Cottbus in the first round of the DFB Pokal on Sunday.

The newly-promoted Bundesliga outfit needed penalties to beat Cottbus, after coming back from 2-0 down to draw the game 2-2 in regular time.

Wolf admitted after the clash that Cottbus were probably the better side on the day, and that Stuttgart now need to recover quickly for the league clash with Hertha.

“We can consider ourselves fortunate to still be playing in the DFB-Cup. In the first-half, we found few decent solutions against a good side, we failed to find the balance and didn’t defend the counter-attacks well.

“In the second-half we tried everything, pulled a goal back and then equalised through an own-goal. Towards the end of the tie, Cottbus were the better side and would have deserved the win.

“We need to regenerate now and then intensively prepare for the game at Hertha BSC. We will then have players returning who missed out on the Cottbus match – that will help us.”
