Arsenal star forward Alexis Sanchez’s right ankle is in an “absolutely terrible state” and the Chilean may have suffered ligament damage, according to boss Arsene Wenger.
The Gunner’s top scorer was taken off 12 minutes from the end of Saturday’s 3-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion.
Sanchez picked up the injury in the first half as he was tackled by Albion’s James McClean.
“He should not have played in the second half but he insisted that he wanted to,” Wenger said. “In the end we had to take him off.”
Arsenal’s next match is a Premier League clash at the Emirates against Manchester City on April 2, but Sanchez has been named in Chile’s squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Venezuela.
Chile play Argentina in Buenos Aires on Thursday.
Asked if Sanchez would be fit to represent his country, Wenger replied: “If it’s only a kick, he will play. If the ligament is damaged, he will not play.”
Sanchez has scored 20 goals in all competitions for the Gunners so far this season
