The 25-year-old AZ Alkmaar striker is the Eredivisie’s top scorer with eight goals in seven games, including two in the KNVB Cup.
He is ahead of PSV’s Jurgen Locadia as the national team boss selected Ryan Babel (Besiktas), Steven Berghuis (Feyenoord), Memphis Depay (Olympique Lyon), Bas Dost (Sporting Lisbon), Eljero Elia (Istanbul Basaksehir), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Ajax), Vincent Janssen (Fenerbahçe), Jeremain Lens (Besiktas), Jürgen Locadia (PSV), Robin van Persie (Fenerbahçe), Quincy Promes (Spartak Moscow) and Arjen Robben (Bayern Münich)
Weghorst has just a solitary under 21 cap to his name and felt he was in with a chance when Advocaat named a provisional side last week.
Speaking to Fox Sports, Weghorst said: “I did not count on it, but I did look for it for the first time, which I say quite honestly. In previous years, at Heracles Almelo and AZ, it was not real that I would be eligible for it.
“So I never had a chance. I never felt it could happen, but now I thought for the first time: I’m going to look. But no, unfortunately.”
Weghorst could yet be called up as Advocaat names his final squad for the upcoming games against Belarus and Sweden on Friday – as Promes and Van Persie are injury doubts.
