Volkswagen has announced the return of its beloved Microbus to production, but with 21st century improvements.
The I.D Buzz was introduced in January this year at the Detroit motor show. Based on the strong and positive response the concept received, the company decided to put into production.
Volkswagen chairman, Herbert Diess, made the announcement at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Monterey.
The I.D Buzz concept differs somewhat from the original Microbus first released into the public in the 1950s. Most notably, the Buzz is an electric driven Microbus-inspired MPV offering seating for up to eight occupants and capable of supporting autonomous driving.
The Buzz is set to go on sale in key markets such as Europe, the United States and China by the end of 2022. It will feature a choice between two different wheelbases and differing interior configurations.
It forms part of a five-strong lineup of electric powered production models which include the I.D. Hatchback and I.D. Cross SUV.
