Blaugrana ended the 2016/17 season with just the Copa del Rey trophy to show for their efforts as Real Madrid won the Primera Division and the Champions League.
Now, after beating their fierce rivals 3-2 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Saturday, as part of their pre-season preparations in the International Champions Cup, Valverde says the club’s ambitions are high.
Barca took a two-nil lead in the tie as Lionel Messi (3) and Ivan Rakitic (7) both scored.
Mateo Kovacic pulled a goal back for Zinedine Zidane’s side with 14 minutes played, ahead of a 36th minute effort from Marco Asensio.
But Gerard Pique snatched the win with his 50th minute goal.
After the tie, a pleased Valverde said: “There are no friendlies against Real Madrid” before explaining “his team has trained very well for the game and I was happy with what I saw in terms of play and controlling the game and we had lots of opportunities to extend our lead.”
He continued by praising “the fantastic welcome Barca got in Miami” and concluded with: “We have seen the great performances of these players, especially Messi who is extraordinary. Our objectives for this year is to win everything we can.”
