As of 20 March 2020, we confirm 52 new additional COVID-19 cases that have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the causative pathogen for COVID-19. To date, the total number of COVID-19 cases stands at 202, with new additions from the Free State Province and the Gauteng Province accounting for more than 50% share value of the total confirmed COVID-19 cases. Coronavirus cases increase to 116 in South Africa as local transmissions rise

21 new cases in South Africa, including the first case of local transmission [source] with only 2911 tests conducted. Mkhize said all the South African citizens who were repatriated from Wuhan, China, at the weekend had been tested for Covid-19 and all were negative. They are in quarantine at The Ranch hotel near Polokwane.

23 new cases in South Africa. President Ramaphosa declares a “National State of Disaster”: a ban is imposed on travel from and to Iran, South Korea, United Kingdom, USA, Germany, Italy and China. In addition to schools being closed and  gatherings of more than 100 people prohibited:

– all travellers who have entered South Africa from high-risk countries since mid-February will be required to present themselves for testing

– travellers from medium-risk countries (such as Portugal, Hong Kong and Singapore) will be required to undergo high intensity screening

6 new cases in South Africa: The Minister of Health has released a statement confirming that there are six new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in South Africa. This now takes the total number of positive patients in the country to 13 [Source].

Gauteng has four cases.

  • A 33-year-old female who had traveled to Italy and returned on 1 March 2020.
  • A couple, 34-year-old male and a 33-year-old female who had travelled to Germany. They returned to South Africa on 09 March 2020.
  • A 57-year-old male who travelled to Austria and Italy and returned to South Africa on 09 March 2020.

KwaZulu-Natal has one case.

  • A 40-year-old male who had traveled to Portugal and returned on 07 March 2020.

Western Cape has one case.

  • A 36-year-old male who had traveled to multiple countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Turkey. He also returned on 09 March 2020.

4 new cases in South Africa: All From KwaZulu-Natal were part of the same group of 10 people that recently traveled from Italy. Of the four newest cases, two are a 38-year-old couple from the uMgugundlovu area in KwaZulu-Natal, one is a 45-year-old male in Petermaritizburg and another is a 38-year-old male.  There are two remain test results from the group of 10 people, one went to the UK didn’t come back to the country

The group is alleged to have been on a ski trip in Italy, which is battling with a COVID-19 outbreak that has killed over 230 people. National Department of Health South Africa expect the results of the other 6 group members who had travelled to Italy within the next 48 hours. It is important to advise the public that the couple’s children were tested and their results have come out negative

“This morning, Thursday March 5, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed that a suspected case of COVID-19 has tested positive. The patient is a 38-year-old male who travelled to Italy with his wife. They were part of a group of 10 people and they arrived back in South Africa on March 1, 2020,” Zweli Mkhize said in a statement.
