Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler claims his side knows the enormity of their top-of-the table fixture with CAF African Champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday.
The second-placed Citizens take on the Premiership champions on Friday evening at Athlone stadium and Tinkler is well aware that securing a double over the Brazilians will confirm the newly-formed club as genuine title contenders.
Captain Lebogang Manyama scored a brace against Pitso Mosimane’s side in the first-round fixture in October last year at Loftus Versfeld stadium, and a repeat performance is needed; against a side the former Orlando Pirates boss feels has significantly improved since then.
“It will be tough,” he told IOL ahead of the game. “But, in my mind, if we win against Sundown’s, then we have to consider that we could be potential title winners.
“We beat Sundowns before (in the corresponding first round match), but they have pushed on since then. They’ve made some good signings, especially in defence, which has added value to their squad.
“Their defence was always an area where I thought they had a weakness, but in new players like (Fares) Hachi and (Ricardo) Nascimento, they’ve got some great depth,” he added.
“They could probably field three starting line-ups that any other PSL team would love to have.”
