Air temperatures reached 37 degrees during the gruelling 90-minute race and the stifling humidity makes grand prix at Sepang on of the most physically-demanding of the season.
“Maybe the team wanted to make the race a bit tougher for me without the drink,” Gasly joked.
“[The drink] worked but just I didn’t have the tube in the mouth.
“I could feel the water but nothing in my mouth. It was a bit annoying.”
“But in the end I think it was positive. I tried not to make some mistakes, take some experience for the next couple of races. And definitely it was a good first one.”
Asked to sum up his weekend, he added: “It was amazing. My first Formula One race, it’s a very special moment.”
