Stand-in Bafana coach Owen Da Gama has promised to play Phakamani Mahlambi and Luther Singh in the friendly against Angola in East London on Tuesday night.
The match takes place at the Buffalo City Stadium with kick off scheduled for 19H00.
Four players – Erick Mathoho, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Dean Furman and Andile Jali – who did duty on Saturday in the 3-1 win over Guinea-Bissau in a friendly international in Durban are injury doubts after picking up knocks in that game.
Da Gama, however, is not overly-phased by the potential absentees as he says he was planning to make changes to the team anyway.
“It’s a concern when you have players injured but the good thing is that we have brought a good number of players with lots of quality so we will not rush these ones back,” he said.
The caretaker coach is also set to give two of South Africa’s exciting younng striking prospects a run out in East London.
“We said prior to the game [against Guinea-Bissau] that we’ll make six changes and we did that. We’ll do that again and give everybody an opportunity to play.
“The two youngsters, Phakamani Mahlambi and Luther Singh, will play. It’s important. Results are important too, but we must be brave enough to give these youngsters an opportunity to play as that is only way we’ll able to move forward.”
While Da Gama says he’s happy to experiment, South Africa will be looking to avoid defeat against Angola as the draw against Guinea-Bissau stretched the national team’s unbeaten run to a record 16 matches.
“Yes, we [Bafana] are on an excellent run,” Mathoho told the Chiefs website. “The unbeaten record is great motivation.”
“All the players enjoyed the game [in Durban]. The team spirit was high. We fought as a unit to win the match.
