Smith ends Lions speculation

Cheetahs head coach Franco Smith has rubbished speculation that he would join the Lions coaching setup next year following the Cheetahs’ axing from Super Rugby.

It was confirmed on Friday that the Cheetahs and Kings would be canned from Super Rugby. While their respective futures remain uncertain, the franchises have been linked with the PRO12.

With current Lions coach Johan Ackermann on his way to the Premiership at the end of the season to coach Gloucester, Smith’s name has been bandied about as a potential successor.

But Smith has quashed the rumours, saying that he still believes in the Cheetahs.

Smith, who is also the current attack coach of the Springboks, took to Twitter to commit to the franchise:

“To end speculation, I still believe in Cheetahs Rugby and am grateful for Springboks opportunity. Lions not an option.”
