The 40-year-old former Racing Club, Estudiantes, River Plate, San Lorenzo and Catania manager, has led Atletico to one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey title, a Supercopa de España, Europa League and Super Cup success, as well as two runners-up Champions League places.
A statement on the Atlético website read: “Diego Pablo Simeone’s renewal is a reality. Our manager signed the new contract that ties him to Atlético de Madrid for two more seasons, until June 30th, 2020.
“The much-awaited news by the Atlético fans is thus confirmed, something that Enrique Cerezo, Miguel Ángel Gil and Simeone himself have always hinted at in their public statements, since the understanding between the club and the manager is complete.”
The statement continued: “Last season, he managed to qualify the team for the fifth consecutive time in the Champions League group stage, in addition to playing again the Champions League and the King’s Cup semi-finals.
“This season, he starts his seventh season as Atlético’s coach, becoming the manager of LaLiga that has been at the head of his team longer, and only Arsene Wenger surpasses him on the European top flight benches.
