Rohr wants Nigeria’s players to reach ‘Iwobi level’

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has challenged his Super Eagles players to deliver in pre-season performances for their clubs just as Alex Iwobi has done at Arsenal.

Iwobi was in good form for the Gunners during the Emirates Cup and got on the score-sheet in a 5-2 hammering of Benfica.

Nigeria have some big games ahead in the next month – back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin, as well as two consecutive World Cup qualifying matches against Cameroon.

And with many of the Super Eagles’ players currently involved in pre-season with their clubs, Rohr admits that he faces a tough task in selecting a squad, saying he will have to rely largely on watching friendly games.

He has therefore urged his players to put in maximum effort during their pre-season club friendlies and has cited the 21-year-old Iwobi as an example.

“I want all my players to have to up their game to at least Iwobi level during this pre-season to merit an invitation for the World Cup clash with Cameroon.

“The season starts on August 11 in Europe and there won’t be enough time to assess the players based on league form,” Rohr told the Nigeria Football Federation.

“I will have to rely mainly on the pre-season form to select players who will feature against Cameroon. So I expect my players to be firing at full cylinder ahead of the season to get a call-up,” he added.

The Super Eagles are top of Group B of their World Cup qualifying campaign, having beaten Zambia and Algeria in their opening two matches.
