Pizarro rules out retirement

Veteran Werder Bremen striker and the Bundesliga’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer, Claudio Pizarro, says he is not planning to retire at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old, who has scored just once in 2016/17, believes he still has plenty to offer although he isn’t sure if he will ply his trade with the River Islanders in 2017/18.

The Peru international has found the back of the net 191 times in 429 Bundesliga appearances and could add to his total when Werder face Cologne away from home on Friday.

Nonetheless, it could be one of his final few games for the team as his contract expires at the end of the campaign. In 18 games for the club, Pizarro has managed just the single strike which came against Bayer Leverkusen in March.

The player told Eurosport he intended to continue playing: “I’ve decided that I’d like to play on for one more year. I don’t yet know where I’ll be, though.”
