Pic of the Day: Rebels with a cause

Rebels with a cause

Following decades of life under an oppressive, military regime, Myanmar’s (formerly known as Burma) recently freed young people are finding resonance with punk culture.

In the largely conservative Buddhist Myanmar, it is not the only uniqueness of punk dress that makes these young people stand out, but also the belief of creating a family based on shared interests and worldviews that make them stand out.

The release of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2010, saw the beginnings of a slow transition for the country from oppressive military dictatorship to a liberal democracy.

In Myanmar, punk culture has taken root as a form of protest against fearing what is ‘other’.
