Let there be synlight

Let there be light – and scientists in Germany created the world’s largest artificial sun to create synthetic light (synlight).

Scientists tested the world’s largest artificial solar simulator at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) near Cologne.

The simulator can produce light 10 000 times the intensity of the solar radiation at the Earth’ surface, with temperatures at the target point of the lamps able to reach temperatures up to 3000°C.

Researchers say the experiment forms part of attempts to improve production processes for solar fuels, such as hydrogen, which will be an important future renewable energy source. Read more.
