Odey: Team comes first

MFM striker Stephen Odey says he’s more concerned about helping his club win silverware than breaking goal scoring records.

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) forward netted his 17th Nigeria Professional Football League goal in Sunday’s 1-0 win against Wikki Tourists at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.

The result left MFD just two points behind league leaders Plateau United, while Odey is now only six short of the record set by Enyimba’s Mfon Udoh in the 2013/2014 season when he banged in 23 goals.

Odey insists his focus is primarily on the team’s ambitions.

“I’m happy with my goals so far. However the team’s objective is to win the league title,” the 19-year-old told Completesportsnigeria.

“No, I’m not under pressure to surpass Mfon’s record of 23 goals. It is what I do and I will try and do more of my hard work.

“I score the goals but I also assist others to do the same when they are in good positions.

“Let’s see how it goes but one thing is certain: the team is more important than personal glory.”

Odey has one senior Nigeria cap to his name after coming off the bench in a 3-0 win over Togo in a friendly.
