Nzama backs Mphahlele for Defender of the Season

Kaizer Chiefs legendary full-back Cyril Nzama has tipped Ramahlwe “Rama” Mphahlele for the Absa Premiership Defender of the Season following last season’s outstanding performances despite the Soweto giants’ disappointing season.

The 27-year-old right-back was a consistent and reliable performer in Amakhosi’s defence in his maiden season having joined the club from Mamelodi Sundowns at the beginning of 2016/17 season’s campaign.

And Mphahlele’s performances in 32 starts in all competitions for Chiefs didn’t go unnoticed as he walked away with three individual awards at Amakhosi’s clubs awards at the beginning of June.

The Bafana Bafana full-back was pitted against Bidvest Wits defenders, a centre-back Thulani Hlatshwayo and left-back Sifiso Hlanti for Defender of the Season award category.

“Rama has really proved that he is a Chiefs material and a leader at the team’s defence. His nomination for Defender of the Season justifies his consistency and outstanding performance throughout the season,” Nzama told Vodacom Soccer.

“Despite a disappointing season, Rama proved to be amongst a few Chiefs players who were a marvel to watch in the last season. I have no doubt that he stands a good chance to walk away with the award though he has been nominated amongst other equally quality defenders in Hlatshwayo and Hlanti,” Nzama added.
