New Bafana captain to fight for Downs spot

Newly appointed Bafana Bafana captain Mario Booysen says he is ready to fight for his place at Mamelodi Sundowns, after returning on loan from SuperSport United.

The defender, who spent last season with Matsatsantsa and won the Nedbank Cup, was appointed as skipper by Bafana coach Stuart Baxter for Saturday’s African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier against Botswana.

Nonetheless, Booysen has made it clear he is not intimidated by returning to a Sundowns outfit that has plenty of quality and experience in the centre back position. He said, “I am still contracted with Sundowns and I have to respect that.

“I am looking forward to returning and fighting for my place there. As far as I am ready to go back, (although) staying with SuperSport would have been nice too.”

Ahead of the away clash with Botswana, he added, “I am fully focused on this Botswana game. It’s very important that we win so that we put ourselves in a better position to qualify for Chan. We are mentally strong and we are ready for whatever game they bring.”
