Motaung rates Benni’s football brains

New Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has been hailed as having a special football brain by Kaizer Chiefs boss Kaizer Motaung.

In an anecdote told by City owner John Comitis, McCarthy’s natural ability as a footballer and game intelligence were identified as really unique and outstanding by Motaung.

The 39-year-old, who is taking on the role of a head coach for the first time after previously being an assistant in Belgium with Sint-Truiden, takes over at the Citizens from Eric Tinkler.

Nonetheless, Comitis told reporters: “You just have to look at how he played, and you know when he played for us at Cape Town Spurs, at 17, he scored two goals against Kaizer Chiefs away from home at Johannesburg Stadium.

“I got a call from Kaizer (Motaung) straight after that and he said, ‘where did you find this footballer, I haven’t seen anybody with such football brains in a long time.'”
