Marquez: Everyone wants to win

Repsol Honda Team rider and current World Champion Marc Marquez does not believe that Valentino Rossi will do his Yamaha teammate Maverick Vinales any favours during the 2017 MotoGP World Championship.

In the MotoGP standings, Vinales tops things with 50 points after winning the opening two races of the season at Qatar and Argentina. Rossi is next with 36 points while Marquez is way down in seventh position with 13 points after struggling so far in 2017.

In an interview with Relatos Solidarios, the 24-year-old Marquez laughed when asked if he expected Rossi to assist his teammate Vinales saying it was unlikely as they all wanted to win.

“I don’t think we’ll see Rossi working to get Viñales the title,” Marquez said. “At the end of the day, all riders want to win. We all know the first rule of motorcycle racing, your first rival is your team-mate.

“All riders, from the first to the last, we all have a winning mentality, that’s why we’re here and everyone wants to win.”

Marquez has had a terrible start to his 2027 MotoGP campaign with a fourth place in Qatar and then in Argentina, he crashed his bike and did not finish the race.

The Spanish rider added that he was surprised by Viñales’ unbelievable debut for Yamaha and that he was already 27 points behind him in the standings.

“Maverick’s debut has been unbelievable, the perfect debut. But it was something that everyone could predict a little, this is how it was in the preseason,” said Marquez. “What I didn’t expect was mine to begin like this. But there is a lot of time and I can turn it around. We’re a sport of fighters and we are going to try to change things.
