Lakay: City players in tune with Benni

Cape Town City winger Lyle Lakay says head coach Benni McCarthy’s winning mentality has rubbed off on the players.

Last season the Citizens won the Telkom Knockout under Eric Tinkler. Just under a year later they find themselves up against Tinkler’s SuperSport United in the 2017 MTN8 final, set for Durban this Saturday evening.

McCarthy has enjoyed a smooth transition since replacing Tinkler at the start of the season, the UEFA Champions League winner seemingly well-received by the City contingent.

And speaking to the Sowetan ahead of the final, Lakay has spoken of the winning mentality the former Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Bafana Bafana marksman brings to the Cape side.

“I am enjoying my time at the team and it is evident from the way we started. I think everyone is having fun,” said Lakay.

“It’s a good feeling to play for a coach who is hungry and also a proven winner willing to fight for his players.

“It works both ways – we also have to show that very same fight and vigour.

“He is only doing it to push you to become a better footballer. Each coach has their methods to get the best out of you,” added the former Bloemfontein Celtic winger, who joined his home-town club ahead of the current season.
