Komphela says Chiefs are ready for new season

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela believes his side are prepared for the 2017/18 campaign, despite completing their pre-season with defeat to Chippa United.

Amakhosi suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Chilli Boys in last weekend’s Premier’s Cup at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London. A late strike from Katlego Mashego handed the victory to Chippa.

Nonetheless, a number of changes were made in the encounter as Komphela ran the rule over Argentine trialist Jonathan Philippe as well as recent new signing Bhongolethu Jayiya. In addition, teenage midfielder Wiseman Meyiwa also saw some action.

“In as much as you want to win pre-season friendlies, it’s not the ultimate objective,” he said. “You want to see players and we saw what we wanted.

“So all we want to see is if you take out (Willard) Katsande and put in (Wiseman) Meyiwa, the team must still be there. We are happy with what we have and we are ready for the season.”

Chiefs have a challenging start to the new season with an MTN8 clash with SuperSport United on 12 August, before facing Bloemfontein Celtic in the Premiership eight days later.
