Hughes keen to keep Shawcross

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes insists captain Ryan Shawcross remains a part of his future plans and that he will receive a new contract.

The Potters defender only has a little over a year left on his current deal, and has reportedly drawn interest from Newcastle United, who will return to the top flight next season.

However, Hughes has revealed that there is no cause for concern and that he would be happy to hold on to Shawcross.

“There’s not an issue, not from our point of view. We certainly want to keep Ryan here if we can,” said Hughes, according to Sky Sports.

“We don’t usually enter into negotiations until there are 12 months to go.

“Sometimes that can help the players, because sometimes more power goes to the player the closer you get to the end. There are two ways to look at it.”
