Reigning MultiChoice Diski Challenge champions Golden Arrows edged out Orlando Pirates 2-0 in their reserve league clash on Saturday afternoon.
The game got off to a bright start with both sides intent on attacking one another, which caused a fierce midfield battle in the opening exchanges.
Pirates came close to breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute when Kamogelo Lechaba delivered an enticing ball into the area, but the onrushing Grant Peters could not connect.
Arrows gradually started to find their rhythm in the attacking third and looked threatening when the likes of Sanele Matemjwa and Kwanele Hlongwane were in possession of the ball.
Hlongwane came agonisingly close to opening the scoring in the 33rd minute when he beat his defender in area, but his resultant shot was palmed over by Tsebo Tsotetsi.
Tsotetsi went from hero-to-zero minutes later when he received his marching orders for picking the ball up outside the area. Pirates’ comedy of errors continued when substitute goalkeeper Lawrence Mtsweni passed the ball to Siphamandla Sabelo and gifted him an open net on the stroke of half-time.
The Kwa-Zulu Natal based-outfit should’ve doubled their advantage in the 69th minute when Siyabonga Dube’s ball caught Darnell Job napping at the back post, but Sabelo’s header was wide of the target.
Arrows sealed the victory in the 80th minute when Substitue Thabo Molefe’s dinked ball into the area found Thabani Zuke, who did well to turn and finish despite the presence of two defenders.
