Harambee Stars call up two schoolboys

Kenya national team coach Stanley Okumbi has called up two schoolboys to his 19-man squad for Harambee Stars’ friendly matches with Mauritania and Togo towards August’s end.

2017 Airtel Rising Stars National Secondary Schools Term Two B football boys’ Most Valuable Player, James Mazembe, is one of the call-ups along with schoolmate Alpha Onyango.

In July, Mazembe signed a three-year deal with SportPesa Premier League side Kariobangi Sharks. Both the player and Onyango, who is contracted to Gor Mahia, are competing in the East Africa School Games in Gulu, Uganda.

Meanwhile, Mazembe explained what national team selection meant to him so early in his career. He told Daily Nation, “I am surprised and elated as well. Okumbi had told me I am good enough to play for the national team. I hope to convince him in training and get my first cap in those friendlies.”

Kenya first take on Mauritania on 31 August and then face Togo on 4 September. Both encounters are set to take place in Morocco in preparation for bigger upcoming competitions.
