Gerrard: Auba would be perfect for Liverpool

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be the perfect player to lead the line for his former club.

Under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds have rarely used an out-and-out forward, preferring to utilise a front three of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane in attack.

That approach has left Daniel Sturridge as nothing more than a peripheral player at Anfield this season, but Gerrard and former England striker Gary Lineker believe Aubameyang would add something new to the Reds attack.

The 27-year-old was in fine form for Dortmund in the Champions League in mid-week, scoring a hat-trick against Benfica to send the German side into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Speaking on BT Sport this week, Lineker and Gerrard both spoke highly of the Saint-Étienne player.

“He’s exactly what Liverpool need, isn’t he Steven?,” Lineker asked Gerrard.

“Yeah, but if he’s in this type of form, he’ll alert a lot of clubs – not just Liverpool,” Gerrard replied.

“He attacks the frame all the time and he gets tap ins because of his movement.”

Aubameyang has often been linked with a move away from Signal Iduna Park over the last 12 months, having scored 30 goals in 36 appearances for Dortmund so far this season.
