The Black Forest club also confirmed they have the option to buy Lienhart at the end of the campaign if his form lives up to expectations. The young star is a central defender by trade but can operate in other areas as well.
The 20-year-old says he is delighted to play for the Christian Streich-coached side, “I quickly realised that Freiburg is the right place to take the next step in my career. I’m looking forward to the challenges this season.”
Meanwhile, Freiburg sporting director added of the new recruit, “Philipp is a young central defender with plenty of potential for development. His concentrated style of play was already obvious in the Austrian youth set-up. It was also important for us to have the option to work with him beyond this year.”
Lienhart was a regular in Real’s reserve team under then coach Zinedine Zidane, before he took over the first team reins. The Austria junior international made his senior bow for Los Blancos in December 2015 as a substitute for James Rodriguez.
