Kicking a bad habit to the curb can sometimes be impossible, but if you’re serious about saying goodbye and letting go, then this is for you!

Kicking a bad habit to the curb can sometimes feel like your life is ending, but fear not, we will help you through the process.

1. Start off with the ’30 Day Habit Challenge’.

According to the Develop Good Habits website, the 30 Day Habit Challenge is “where you structure your entire life around the completion of one specific habit goal.” Focusing on one goal for thirty days won’t help you get rid of the habit entirely, but it will lessen the urge to do it.

2. Set goals and a date!

If you’re a smoker and you want to stop smoking, truth is you’re not going to quit immediately, habits like these take time. Start off with setting a goal for yourself. Encourage yourself to take that step in saying goodbye to that habit and set a date too! For a smoker, cut back on how many cigarettes you smoke per day.  Give yourself a month or two to achieve your goal. Just be sure to stick to the date you set out!

3. Find a way or routine that works for you!

When starting to cut back on certain things, monitor the way it affects your mood. The manner in which your friend kicks a bad habit might not work for you. Try out different ways to stop that habit and stick to whichever one works for you!

4. Habit reminders are a must!

The Develop Good Habits website states that “Habit reminders are a great way to keep following a new routine”. This can be set as reminders on your phone, on tiny pieces of paper at your desk or even notes on appliances or items that you use daily. It might seem ridiculous, but this will help in the long run.

5. Create a ‘Fine’ jar!

This one might be the quickest way to get rid of any bad habit! Whether it’s smoking, drinking, biting your nails, each time you find yourself doing whatever it is that you’re trying to get rid of put a R1 or R10 into a jar. But make sure that the money in the jar will be given to charity. This will make you aware of what you doing and help you get rid of that bad habit. You’ll soon realise that you’d much rather save your coins than throw them in a jar!
