Europe’s Bafana stars to fly direct to Cape Verde

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has confirmed that national team players based in Europe will be allowed to fly directly to Cape Verde for Friday’s World Cup qualifier.

The national team face the Blue Sharks in a crucial Group D encounter, as Bafana are currently tied top of Group D with Burkina Faso. After Friday’s clash, they will face Verde again four days later at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Nonetheless, Baxter has seemingly opted to avoid any extra jet lag for his players based in Europe, by allowing them to travel the shorter journey to the volcanic archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa.

He told the South African Football Association’s official website: “Having discussed it with manager Barney Kujane, we found it that it made a lot of sense to ask European-based players to fly straight to Cape Verde instead of coming here and then embark on another long journey to the Island.”

SAFA confirmed the players coming from that continent: “Keagan Dolly who plays for Montpellier in France, Andile Jali (KV Oostende FC in Belgium), Kamohelo Mokotjo (Brentford, England).

“Bongani Zungu (Vitoria Guimares, Portugal), Thulani Serero (SBV Vitesse, Holland), Tokelo Rantie (Genclerbirligi, Turkey) and Kermit Erasmus who plays for Rennes in France.”
