Ertugral: Pirates is not a team

Former Orlando Pirates coach Muhsin Ertugral believes that the Sea Robbers do not play like a team, although that could change under new coach Kjell Jonevret.

Ertugral stepped down at Pirates last year after being clobbered 6-1 by SuperSport United, with Augusto Palacios appointed on an interim basis. Jonevret recently took over from the Peruvian on a full-time three-year deal.

Nonetheless, ahead of Saturday’s Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, Ertugral, who is currently out of work, says that Pirates have previously not being playing together as a collective unit.

He told Soccer Laduma: “Current form doesn’t make a difference. Obviously, the other team has more confidence and the other one needs to come out of their shells.

“They have the quality but the problem with Pirates is that they don’t play together; the team is not a team. The team has to be a team and they have to fight for each other and know how to play as an organisation.

“What is good about that is Steve Komphela’s side is playing more like a team and that is the advantage they have because football is not about individuals. Football is about being more organised and that makes you get the upper hand.

“But with the new coach (Jonevret) and the new energy, anything can happen and Pirates have the individual brilliance.”
