The Sharks had the better of the first-half, taking a 14-3 lead in to the interval. Unfortunately, a 10-minute lapse after half-time in which the Lions scored two tries allowed the home side back in to the game.
But the men from Durban definitely had last year’s finalists rattled and Du Preez is happy with his players, despite them being on the losing side.
“The guys were really great today, every single one of them. We were all very pleased with the way it went but unfortunately, we didn’t get the result,” Du Preez told reporters after the game.
“We lost a bit of momentum in the first 10 minutes after half-time and the Lions did really well to score two tries.”
Meanwhile, Du Preez took a veiled swipe at the match officials. When asked what he made of the decision towards the end of the match, he remained mum.
“The final one – the one under the poles? Or the one near the touchline? What do you make of it? I can’t comment on bad officiating, you know that. You have to make up your mind whether it was right or wrong,” Du Preez answered.
