Cocu confident despite PSV shortcomings

Phillip Cocu says uncertainty surrounding his role as head coach at PSV Eindhoven is not affecting him ahead of the opening fixtures of the Eredivisie.

PSV won back-to-back titles under Cocu’s management before succumbing to a third-place finish behind Ajax Amsterdam and Champions Feyenoord last season.

However, it’s been the poor form in pre-season and the embarrassing Europa League third-round exit that’s raised questions over the suitability of his management with the Dutch giants.

Boeren suffered a 2-0 aggregate defeat to Croatian side Osijek, after losing by solitary strikes in the home and away fixtures.

“I believe that we can win the Eredivisie this season,” he told reporters. “A club like PSV Eindhoven must always set the target of winning the league.

“I believe it was a disgrace to be eliminated from Europe so early and we are feeling embarrassed about it.

“I can still affect my players. We have a lot of quality in our squad and a lot of young and eager players too and we must now perform on the pitch starting on Saturday at home to AZ Alkmaar,” the former Netherlands midfielder added.

“I am convinced I can still affect my players. When you have the feeling as a manager that is not the case then it is time to drawn your own conclusions which I would be willing to do if such a situation arose.”
