Chiefs hand Thierry Henry number 14 jersey

Kaizer Chiefs honoured Arsenal, Barcelona and France legend, Thierry Henry, by handing the retired striker the number 14 jersey in the club’s colours.

The superstar, who is the Gunners all-time leading scorer from his time in the English Premier League, was a visitor to Naturena this past weekend.

The former France international, who won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European championships with Les Bleus, was an ambassador for the NBA Africa game which took place in Johannesburg last Saturday.

The player, who wore number 14 for the majority of his glittering playing days in France, Italy, England, Spain and the USA, gladly accepted the shirt and said South African football had played its own part in his career.

He told Amakhosi’s official website: “I made my debut for France against SA and finished off my international career against the same opponent. I also know the surname Motaung, because there was a player called Sizwe Motaung (late Bafana Bafana defender) in the team.

“I am glad to have met ‘Shabba’ (Siphiwe Tshabalala) because I still remember the goal he scored against Mexico in the 2010 World Cup, and it is cool to see that he wears jersey number 14, which is a special number to me.”
