Amuneke rules out Nigeria U17 return

Former Nigeria U17 coach Emmanuel Amuneke has ruled out a return to taking charge of any of the junior national sides, as he says he has bigger career ambitions.

The 46-year-old was assistant to head coach Manu Garba at FIFA’s 2013 U17 World Cup which the Golden Eaglets won 3-0 against Mexico in the final.

Two years later he was the main man in charge when the Eaglets defended their title with a 2-0 win over Mali in Chile. It was his nation’s fifth crown in the competition.

Nonetheless, Amuneke, who won Olympic Gold and an AFCON gong with the Super Eagles in his playing days, has ruled out returning to any of the nation’s junior national outfits as coach.

He told Scorenigeria.com: “No, I’m not supposed to be handling either the U17s or U20s anymore. That’s the reason I’ve not expressed any desire in applying for the jobs.

“For now, no, but who knows in future one could still be available to help his country not minding if it’s on a bigger level (such as the senior men’s side).”
