Ushuthu began their life back in the top flight with a 1-0 victory over Free State Stars on Saturday, and are in Port Elizabeth to play Chippa United on Tuesday.
“I have been with the team for one week but the boys are already showing good signs and the never [-say-] die attitude. They are responding well to my approach so far,” Johnson was quoted by The Sowetan.
“We must make sure that the team remains in the Premiership, that is our main target,” he added.
“Winning our first game was very important because it boosts our confidence going forward. We planned well for them [Free State Stars]. The boys showed character because they played the better part of the game with 10 men [after Sadat Ouro-Akoriko was red-carded in the 13th minute].
“You’ve got to give credit to the boys for putting in the effort, they looked like they were enjoying the game.”
